January 3rd, 2009 will mark Alaska’s 50th anniversary of admittance into the Union. To commemorate this event the Alaska Mint is issuing limited edition, .999 fine, one ounce silver medallions. Each medallion is stamped on the rim edge with a unique serial number; they will only be made on demand through 2009.
The face of the medallion is a reproduction of a popular photo from 1958 showing President Dwight Eisenhower standing with the first governor of the state of Alaska, Mike Stepovich, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Fred Seaton. Stepovich is holding a copy of the Anchorage Daily News with the headline “WE’RE IN”. This special edition newspaper was flown in a jet bomber to Washington D.C. for distribution to various officials. The reverse of the medallion features the official logo for the 50th Anniversary Statehood Celebration. (FOR MORE INFORMATION about Alaska's 50th Anniversary Statehood Celebration scroll to the bottom of the page)
There is no way to tell how many of these medallions will be minted. If the final mintage comes anywhere close to the number (1,160) of the 35th Statehood medallion made in 1994, this piece may become a classic sooner rather than later.
1994 Alaska Statehood 35th Anniversary Commemorative Medallion (VERY limited availability; selling only as a set with 50th Anniversary)

Only 1,160 of these medallions were produced
The Alaska Mint issued the 35th Anniversary medallion in 1994. It is one ounce of .999 fine silver and each piece is serial numbered. The medallion depicts an Alaska Native in front of a caribou with flags of Alaska and the United States. The back of the medallion features the State Seal of Alaska.
We have held a small number of these medallions for 15 years! They are being offering ONLY as part of a set with the above listed 2009 50th Statehood Medallion.
Given the low (and final) mintage of the 1994 medallion, there will be VERY few 35-50 sets in existence when all is said and done (probably well under 200, likely less than 100!). Make sure you have one of those few sets!
The two-coin set will sell first come first serve for $175.00.
More on Alaska's 50th Statehood Anniversary Celebration
The history of Alaska’s movement toward statehood is a colorful timeline filled with characters who make for some very interesting reading. The Office of the Governor of Alaska has put together an entertaining and information filled web site for the ongoing 50th celebration. It includes many historic Alaskan photos. The link is listed below. Here are five quoted paragraphs, examples of what you can find under their “History” tab, telling some of what happened in Alaska on January 3rd, 1959:
At the federal building in Anchorage, members of the Anchorage Elks Club recruited enough hands to unfurl a 40-by-60-foot American flag, while the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous queen stood on a fire truck ladder to add a 49th star.
In Fairbanks, a plan to make the Chena River run gold went awry when the saltwater dye turned a stretch of the river bright green. But nothing could dampen the celebration. Leaning on his cane on a downtown street corner in the midst of the din, old-timer Ed Crawford said, "This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to Alaska."
The Shake 'n Steak restaurant in Fairbanks ran a "Move Over Texas" half-off special on all dinners, a jab at the Lone Star State, which is about half the size of Alaska.
From Anchorage to Nome and Kotzebue, Alaskans lit bonfires, while women in Skagway paraded with embroidered buttons that read "Bigger than Texas, better than California--God's Country."
For many Alaskans, statehood fulfilled a dream that symbolized the promise of a better tomorrow.
